Coffee Varietal : Washed Caturra & Catuai SHB
Grown at altitudes of between 1200 to 1600 metres on the western slopes of oceanside mountains, in a region where small independent farms dominate. Volcanic soils, a stable temperature and abundant sunlight develop the special taste of this washed Caturra and Catuai varietal strictly hard bean coffee.
Taste: A medium bodied coffee with smooth flavour and aroma, and clean high acidity
Our coffees are from selected estates and all grown over 2,000 metres. These are marked SHB (strictly hard bean) a feature of top arabica coffees. Our main supplier comes from the Orosi region north of San Jose, coffee has been grown here for 400 years. The higher altitude allows the beans to mature slowly, increasing acidity and giving a fuller flavour. Its mild flavour with a little piquancy makes Costa Rican coffee very good for breakfast.
Grown on the Coocafe Cooperative. This is a group of 9 cooperatives made of 3500 small organic producers. They produce 100,000 x 70kg sacks of coffee per year. The money raised from the Fairtrade programme has supported 224 schools and technical colleges.
This sort of support stops rural migration to the cities. In the organic programme they have concentrated on biodiversity, sustainable agriculture and conservation.
Water purification and shade grown coffee are two other major factors.. The coffee has a superb crisp taste with slight acidity and a full body.
